Get Active, Get on Your Bike Project!

SACMHF have successfully been awarded some grant funding from Sandwell Council and Cycling UK to lead a 12-week bike project with the aim to help local people and service users – ‘Get Active’ and get out and about in the community, riding bikes in green spaces!

This Project has been a great success with groups of individuals attending at the Kuumba Centre every Thursday. Participants have been involved with ‘Learn to fix it’ sessions, ‘Learn to Ride’ and generally gaining knowledge of the ‘do’s and don’ts’ on a bike for health and safety. We have had a number of people who have successfully learnt to ride a bike in just three sessions! They have enjoyed bike rides from the Kuumba Centre to Dartmouth Park and most recently enjoyed a steady ride to The Hawthorns.

Hilda said: “Embarking on my first bike session as an Occupational Therapist student at the Kuumba Centre, I never imagined how much I’d learn and grow. From learning how to ride a bike to enjoying the company of the group, each session was a journey of resilience and discovery. Today marks my last ride with this amazing team, and I’m grateful for the invaluable lessons in both physical and mental well-being. Thank you, SACMHF, for making this project possible. I look forward to seeing more service users benefit from this wonderful experience!”

We hope service users will continue to participate in the bike project and we look forward to more bike rides, and staying active. A big thank you to our bike instructor lead, Paulette Jones from ‘Give a girl a Bike’ who has been very accommodating and encouraging to our learners and non learners. Thank you to our Volunteer – Omer who has been a fantastic help and has been putting his bike knowledge to good use and lastly a big thank you to Michelle Smith from Cycling UK for her support and guidance with this project.
