Cooking With Kuumba
Over the past six weeks, service users at SACMHF have had the incredible opportunity to participate in a Cooking Group – Cooking with Kuumba at the West Bromwich Community Centre – thanks to the support of Groundwork. This initiative has been a wonderful experience, allowing participants to learn new recipes and the importance of nutritional information.
During the sessions, participants explored a variety of recipes, preparing healthy and budget-friendly starters, mains, and desserts each week. The group not only focused on cooking but also engaged in educational discussions on key topics such as; sugar, salt, fats, and water. They learnt about the recommended daily intake, how to read nutritional labels, and the meaning behind the traffic light system on food packaging.
Each week, participants came together to cook and then enjoyed sharing a meal in a warm, communal setting. The social aspect of the group was just as valuable as the cooking skills learnt – not only enhanced their culinary skills, but also fostered new friendships and a sense of community
Here’s what some of our people who use services (PWUS) had to say about the experience:
“It’s been brilliant and stimulating. I’ve met new people and friends, and now I can cook dishes I never thought I could before.”
“I’ve learned a bit more about making sweet desserts… the educational part was really informative.”
This Cooking Group has been a fantastic success, combining practical skills with essential nutritional education and offering a supportive environment for all participants. We are grateful for the opportunity provided by Groundwork and look forward to more initiatives like this in the future.
