Celebrating Black History Month & World Mental Health Day
October marks Black History Month in the UK. Black History Month is intended to recognise the contribution and achievements of those with African or Caribbean heritage. It’s also an opportunity for people to learn more about the effects of racism and how to challenge negative stereotypes.
When Black History Month first started in the UK, there was a big focus on black American history. Over time there has been more attention on black British history and key black figures from the UK.
On Friday 7th October 2022 – we held a mini celebration in aid of people from African and Caribbean backgrounds who have been a fundamental part of British History for centuries. We also decided to combine the day in celebration with World Mental Health Day which took place on Monday 10th October 2022. The overall objective of World Mental Health Day is to raise awareness of mental health issues around the world and to mobilize efforts in support of mental health. Every mind matters have some useful top tips on how to improve your mental wellbeing. You can view these here. Don’t forget to share our Campaign #LetitOut on your social media platforms. Our video campaign can be accessed here. Courtney from Caico Candles, who is a small business owner from Wolverhampton also attended the day and set up a mindfulness session for some of our service users.
Kuumba’s celebration involved steel pan entertainment from the wonderful ‘Mighty Jamma’ and a delicious selection of Caribbean cuisine from Roses Aroma Catering. Leimah Charley, who is a member of the Kuumba Centre, did a powerful spoken poetry piece in honour of Black History Month and Mental Health Awareness. Leimah said: “without the Kuumba Centre I probably wouldn’t be here today; I am grateful for them and always being there to support me. It’s places like this that people like us need in times of need our lowest points.”
We had a fantastic day, and we look forward to next year’s celebrations.
